Yoga is like music. The rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind and the harmony of the soul, create the symphony of life.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga is generally thought of as the practice of the physical postures, as opposed to more meditative or spiritual disciplines. As taught by our guru, Sri B.K.S. Iyengar, the yoga postures become prayers offered in the temple of the body. In the Iyengar tradition, the emphasis is on precise and dynamic practice of the classical poses and adapting thepose to suit the individual. Poses are aided, when necessary, by props such as blankets, blocks, or belts to enable students to get into postures they otherwise couldn't. In this respect, Iyengar yoga is good for physical therapy because it assists in the manipulation of inflexible or injured areas.

Benefits

You do not have to be "in shape" or flexible to join a yoga class. You can begin to explore this ancient tradition and discover its potential for bringing balance and wholeness into your life. We do not teach seated meditation or deep breathing, as these are advanced techniques, unsuitable for the average student. We do teach all students how to work with awareness, how to bring the inner and outer worlds into greater contact with each other, and how to pay attention to the functioning of the breath. If practiced with consistency and devotion, these basic techniques are powerful tools for integration and transformation on every level: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Yoga students often find relief from back pain and other ailments, such as asthma, insomnia, chronic fatigue, hypertension, indigestion, constipation, and arthritis.
